A Question

Was the original Wizard of Oz all in black & white or was it in color? The part in question is that when they went to Oz it turned to color.

Absolute Delight

What a fabulous and refreshing film. The creatures were well done and realistic. The PC (political correctness) was kept to a minimum  (significant only in omissions from the book, not in abridging or adulterating the literature). It was well paced and the voices were good.

Can't think of much to dislike in this one. The beavers made a cute older couple that always squabled but dearly loved one another. I found Aslan to be the awesome but gentle and just Christ figure he is supposed to be. Whether or not one takes the religious interpretation, I think they got the character right. I was impressed with how he appeared magnificent, cudly and a little frightening all at the same time. The kids are great. Lucy is adorable and Peter comes of age convincingly.

Like all good fantasy/fairy tale genre movies, this one works on different levels and so is good for kids of all ages and adults of all persuasions.

Okay but I found it dragged a bit... (spoilers)

In case you were wondering, it was okay but I found it dragged a bit. They cut most of the action and gore from the book to make it more consumable to the masses. It was also PC'd up to keep from offending anyone that would see the movie without reading the books. Then again I'd have been positively amazed had Father Christmas (which none of them referred to as Father Christmas or as Santa Claus directly IIRC) actually said to the girls "I do not mean you to fight in the great battle" or "battles are ugly when women fight".

Anyway, it's typical watered down Hollywood tripe but your kids will like it, even if they do kill the far too cuddly looking lion at one point. At least I forced my daughter to put up with my reading 'The Magician's Nefew' before we went and saw the movie.

I would highly recommend it

We saw it with our kids Friday night and loved it. My wife has read the book though I never managed to get around to it before and it is on the long list I have. She said it was pretty close with some obvious changes made for the time requirements and the rest. Since she is a total book nuts and English Major who graduated high up in her class, I'll take her word on it. The scenes of the boy running back for the picture of his father and how the boys generally took charge was very unusual in our times. Women were protected and men were doing the protecting with the evil character actually being a woman instead of a man.

Over all I would highly recommend it to people as a great movie to see and well worth the money unlike most of the crap coming out anymore. Heck, how ofter does a packed sold out theater stand up and applaud after a movie anymore? They did when we went to it!

Content was a little watered down

I've seen it twice already. yesterday and the midnight show. i thought the content was a little watered down, but that it had more to do with disney father than hollywood politics. they took out the bit about the white queen being the daughter of lilith, and the religious elements were very toned down. i thought the changes made it much more similar to the Matrix in that one could watch the film and be oblivious to the religious elements, outside the sons of adam and daughters of eve parts.

It did come off a little like a lord of the rings wannabe with the action (which was shot on one of the locations a scene from LoTR was shot), but the overall feel of the movie was very true to the book, and the message definitely came across.

I thought aslan could have been a stronger character, voice-wise. liam neeson did an excellent job, but he was so compassionate that i had a hard time believing aslan was really threatening. i think disney did this so as not to frighten children. but personally i would i have liked a deeper voice and a bigger CG lion.

My 13 year old cousin loved it, maybe even more than LoTR. he stayed awake through the midnight showing. it's definitely a kid-friendly movie, so i can imagine this doing very well, assuming King Kong doesn't pull away some of the audience.
